We are an independent publisher. We turn state statutes, official agency forms and common contract structures into plain-English templates, and we tell you where every rule comes from. We are not a law firm, and nothing here is legal advice.
Who we are
Legal Template Vault is an independent publishing project, launched in 2026, that compiles free legal document templates for people and small businesses in the United States. Every template can be downloaded as a PDF and as an editable Word file, without an account, a trial or an email address.
The site exists because many free templates online do not say which state’s rules they follow or where their clauses come from. We do the opposite: each template page explains the document in plain English, and our state guides link to the statute or the official agency form so you can check the rule at its source.
Who runs the site
The site is owned and edited by its founder and published under the editorial byline Daniel Mercer, a researcher and writer focused on plain-English legal information and contract standardization.
Daniel does not hold a law license and does not give legal advice. He compiles each template from public legal sources, writes or edits the explanations, and reviews every page before it is published. The byline on each page is the person accountable for what it says.
How we build every template
We use software tools, including artificial intelligence, to help with research, structure and editing. They do not supply the facts: statutes, fees and deadlines come from the official sources cited on each page, and a person reviews every page and takes responsibility for it. What we cover
For documents whose rules change from state to state, start with our bill of sale by state directory, the small estate affidavit guide or last will rules by state.
What we are not
- Not a law firm. We cannot tell you whether a template fits your situation. For that, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
- No attorney review. We do not employ attorneys, and we do not claim attorney review that has not happened.
- No filing or notarization. We do not file documents with courts or agencies, and we do not notarize or witness signatures.
- No copies of your data. The online generator runs in your browser. Nothing you type into it is sent to our servers.
How the site is funded
The templates are free to use, and that will not change. Today the site is paid for by its founder and by one optional $0.99 extra, the Premium Pack for the child travel consent form. The site may also show advertising. Ads are always kept visibly separate from the content and never change what we publish. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.

How do you keep templates up to date?
Pages are re-checked on a rolling basis, starting with the most-read templates and any area where we learn of a change in the law. Each page shows the date it was last verified, and a reader report always triggers a re-check.
How can I report an error or request a template?
Email contact@legaltemplatevault.com with the page address and a short description, or use our contact page. Substantive errors are corrected on the page itself.
