What Legal Template Vault offers
Free legal templates, explained state by state
Download a template in PDF or Word, fill it in online, and check what your state actually requires, with links to the official source. No account, no trial, no email address.
Legal Template Vault is an independent publisher of free legal document templates for people and small businesses in the United States. This page explains everything the site offers, how each part works, and what we do not do. We are not a law firm, and nothing on this site is legal advice.
How it works
Pick your document
Browse by category or by state, and read the plain-English guide on the page to make sure it is the right document.
Fill it in
Download the blank PDF or Word file, or type your details into the online generator to get a completed draft.
Check your state’s rules
Before you sign, check signing, notary and filing rules in our state guides, which link to the statute or the official form.
Everything we offer
Professional services
Need more than a free template?
Three paid services for people and organizations that need more than a free download. Each one is quoted in writing after you tell us what you need: to start, contact us. Nothing is charged before you accept a quote.

For small businesses · Quote on request
Branded business templates
Your invoices, quotes, receipts and everyday business forms, redesigned with your logo, colors and business details, ready for your team to fill in.
What you get
Good for: Small businesses, landlords, contractors, clubs and nonprofits that want consistent, professional paperwork without starting from a blank page.
Not included: We apply your branding to our published templates. We do not rewrite the legal terms of a contract to fit your situation; that is a job for a licensed attorney.

For individuals and offices · Quote on request
Official forms research report
Tell us the document and the state. We find the current official form and the rules that apply to it, and send you a report where every point links to the source we read.
What you get
Good for: People filing a form for the first time, small offices, and relocation or HR teams dealing with more than one state.
Not included: We report what the official sources say. We do not tell you which option suits your situation, fill in the form for you or file it.

For organizations · Quote on request
Template license for businesses
Use our templates beyond your own internal paperwork: on your website, intranet or HR portal, or in the packs you give to clients and members, under a written license.
What you get
Good for: Property managers, coworking spaces, business associations, HR platforms, schools and libraries.
Not included: A license is not legal advice or attorney review, and it does not make us responsible for how the documents are used.
Contact us
Use the “Request a quote” button or the contact page and tell us what you need. Please do not send confidential documents in a first message.
Get a written quote
We reply with the scope, the price and the delivery date. We aim to reply within 2 to 3 business days.
Receive your files
Work starts once you accept the quote, and the files or report are delivered by email.
Legal Template Vault is not a law firm. None of these services is legal advice, and using them does not create an attorney-client relationship. See our terms of service.
Free legal templates in PDF and Word
Every template can be downloaded as a PDF to print and as an editable Word file. There is no sign-up, no paywall and no email gate. Each template page also explains the document in plain English: what it does and when you need it, the key clauses and what each one means, the common mistakes that make it weaker or unusable, and answers to the questions people ask most.
You can also start from the contract templates library or the real estate templates library.

Most template pages include a generator. You type the names, dates, amounts and other details into a short form, and it builds a completed draft that you can download as a Word file (.doc) to keep editing, or open as a print-ready page and save as a PDF from your browser. It currently covers 43 document types, from a bill of sale or a lease agreement to a last will, a promissory note or a job application form.
State guides with official sources
The same document can follow different rules from one state to another: who has to sign, whether a notary is needed, which form the state agency accepts, and the deadlines that apply. Our state guides set out those rules and link to the statute or the official agency form, so you can check them at the source. Where a state does not require a form, or where an official form is optional, the guide says so.

In-depth guides
Some documents need more than a template. These guides explain the process step by step, with the official forms and rules behind it.
Corrections and template requests
If you find an error, an outdated rule or a broken link, or you need a document we do not have yet, email contact@legaltemplatevault.com with the page address and a short description. A reader report always triggers a re-check of the affected page. Substantive errors are corrected on the page itself, and a template affected by a change in the law is updated or withdrawn. More on how we work in our editorial policy.
Recently updated
Since August 2026 we add state guides in small batches, each one checked against the statute or the official agency form before it goes live. The most recent changes:
New professional services: branded business templates, official forms research reports and template licenses for businesses.
Real estate rules-by-state pages rebuilt with state tables checked against the official sources: purchase agreement, seller disclosure, listing agreement, warranty deed, quitclaim deed. Real estate library reorganized, and links that pointed to state versions we do not publish were corrected on 13 pages.
New guides: Iowa, Arkansas, Kansas, California, New York bill of sale; Texas power of attorney, New York health care proxy, Georgia advance directive, Texas residency affidavit, odometer disclosure statement, California small estate affidavit, Michigan property transfer affidavit. Rewritten against official sources: child travel consent, proof of residency letter, direct deposit authorization.
New guides: Georgia bill of sale, Florida power of attorney, Texas medical power of attorney, Texas affidavit of heirship. Four duplicate pages merged into their main versions.
New bill of sale guides for Texas, Oregon, Missouri, Washington.
How we compare
Many online legal document services ask you to create an account or start a trial before you can download. Here is how we differ, including what they offer and we do not.
| Legal Template Vault | Many subscription document sites | |
|---|---|---|
| Price to download | Free. One optional $0.99 extra. | Often a free trial that becomes a paid subscription |
| Account or email | Not needed | Usually required |
| What you type in | Stays in your browser | Usually saved to your account |
| State rules | Linked to the statute or official form in our state guides | Varies by site |
| Attorney involvement | None. We are not a law firm. | Some offer attorney-drafted documents or attorney access |
| E-signature and storage | Not offered | Often included in paid plans |
What we do not offer
- Legal advice. We cannot tell you whether a template fits your situation. For that, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
- Attorney review. We do not employ attorneys, and we do not claim attorney review that has not happened.
- Filing or notarization. We do not file documents with courts or state agencies, and we do not notarize or witness signatures.
- Storage of your documents. We do not keep copies of anything you fill in with the generator.
If your matter involves significant money, a dispute already underway or unusual facts, hire a lawyer. See our full disclaimer.
How the site is funded
The templates are free to use. Today the site is paid for by its founder, by the optional Premium Pack and by the professional services described above. The site may also show advertising, or link to a paid service where it genuinely solves something a template cannot, such as forming a company with the state or collecting an electronic signature. Advertising is always kept visibly separate from the content, every affiliate link is labelled as sponsored, and neither changes what we publish. Details are in our affiliate disclosure.
Frequently asked questions
Are the templates really free?
Yes. Every template can be downloaded in PDF and Word without paying, creating an account or giving an email address. The only paid extras are the optional $0.99 Premium Pack for the child travel consent form and the professional services on this page, which are quoted on request.
Is a template from this site legally valid?
A template is a starting point. Whether a signed document is valid depends on your state’s law, on how it is filled in and signed, and on the facts of your situation. Our state guides link to the official rules so you can check them, and for anything with high stakes you should have an attorney review the final document.
Do you see what I type into the generator?
No. The generator runs in your browser and does not send the information you enter to our servers.
Can you add a template for my state?
Send the document type and the state to contact@legaltemplatevault.com. We publish state-specific versions only where we can verify the rules against the statute or the official agency source.
Do you give legal advice?
No. We are not a law firm and we do not employ attorneys, so we cannot tell you whether a template fits your situation. If your matter involves significant money, a dispute already underway or unusual facts, talk to a licensed attorney in your state.
Need a document we do not have?
Tell us the document and the state. Requests help us decide what to publish next.
